Nebraska Water Science Center
This Web site presents the 2005-06 results from analysis for selected explosives and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in samples that were collected for the study titled "Ground-water quality in the Platte River alluvial aquifer, east-central Saunders County, Nebraska, 2005-06." This study is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Nebraska Water Science Center in cooperation with the Metropolitan Utilities District (MUD). Samples are scheduled to be collected in spring and fall of 2005 and 2006. For each scheduled sampling, ground-water samples will be collected from six monitoring wells that are screened in the Platte River alluvial aquifer and located near Wann, Nebraska; two samples will be collected from each well—near the top and bottom of the well's screened area. The objective of the study is to determine if explosives or VOCs, such as cyclonite (also known as cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, Royal Demolition Explosive, or RDX) or trichloroethylene (TCE), which are contaminants associated with the Nebraska Ordnance Plant near Mead, Nebraska, are present in the sampled wells. The sampling points—near the top and near the bottom of the screened area in each well—were selected to determine if the contaminants are present in the aquifer at those locations and depths.
