Ground Water Conditions in Nebraska

Map of Nebraska showing location of real-time wells. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) ground-water network for Nebraska currently consists of 27 wells in which ground-water levels are continuously monitored on a 15-minute or 1-hour basis. Most of the wells are located in three distinct areas of Nebraska--the Platte River Valley of Central Nebraska, the Nebraska Panhandle, and the southwest part of the State. These wells are located in areas of the State where stresses to the surfical aquifers are high. In particular, this network of ground-water recorder wells is located in areas where stresses on the aquifer because of ground-water pumping tends to be high because of the high density of irrigation wells or recharge to the aquifer is limited. Some of the wells in the network are "real time" where the data is sent, via satellite telemetry, on a 1-hour or 4-hour basis. Recorder wells not on real time are regularly serviced.
